Packaging up Malacca to meet global market needs

The SME Branding and Packaging Mobile Gallery is a pilot project aimed at creating awareness among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in rural areas on the importance of innovative branding and packaging to meet global market needs. It is essentially a bus that’s been outfitted with displays of redesigned and repackaged local products. It will be making trips to designated locations to hold workshops and training sessions for SMEs.

The SME Branding and Packaging Mobile Gallery is a collaborative effort between Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and SME Corp. Malaysia and an extension of the Branding Innovation Centre located within the university’s campus in Cyberjaya that was set up to assist small and medium-sized enterprises through training.

It made its first stop in SMK Seri Mahkota—a secondary school—in Umbai, Malacca in early April. It was attended by YB Dato’ Mukhriz Mahathir bin Tun Dr. Mahathir, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI); YB Datuk Wira Haji Ahmad Hamzah, parliament member of the district of Jasin—one of the three districts in the state of Malacca; as well as SMEs who were interested in giving their branding approach a facelift.

The events of the day consisted of a lecture presentation conducted in the school hall by Mobile Gallery trainers on the topics of globalised brands and the importance of packaging and branding, followed by a presentation of the Mobile Gallery which attracted over 200 people.

One of the attendees summed up the benefits of the Mobile Gallery training session by saying, “It gave us new ideas to promote our products especially on understanding how to enhance the quality of the packaging and labelling.”

Several other stops followed the first leg in Umbai, with the Mobile Gallery having visited Beruntung in Hulu Selangor, Jempol in Negeri Sembilan, Seberang Perai and Tanjong in Penang and Temerloh in Pahang.

The Mobile Gallery will be officially launched near the end of May by the Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak in his hometown of Pekan in Pahang. The Mobile Gallery will also be making an appearance at the SMIDEX ’10 Innovation Showcase to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 1st – 3rd June, 2010 as well as several other locations in the country.
