Brand Innovation Centre for SMEs

The Brand Innovation Centre, a collaborative effort between SME Corporation Malaysia and Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) was officially launched by YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Bin Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry today. This public-private sector collaboration was initiated to promote branding to the SMEs in Malaysia and to assist them in building and developing their own brands of products and services as well as to enhance SME products packaging at this Centre.

In his speech during the launching ceremony, YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa said “to remain relevant and competitive, it is critical to enhance the competitiveness of products and services offered through improved design and branding, as well as to deploy innovative marketing strategies.”

The Centre will focus to promote awareness on the importance of branding and packaging, which is aligned to the Government’s efforts in enhancing the visibility of SME products and services in both the domestic and international markets. “Branding is designed to create and built product identity, thus establishing a strong brand will go a long way to enhance product competitiveness,” added YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa.

The Government has also focused on promoting quality brands to build consumer loyalty and differentiate Malaysian products and services in the market. The pursuit of such quality requires rigorous improvements, particularly in product design and packaging, labelling and marketing.

The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) also hoped that SME Corp. Malaysia and LUCT will able to forge closer ties and establish meaningful cooperation not only in the area of enhancing the packaging and branding of Malaysian products and services but also the relevant areas that will benefit SMEs.

At the ceremony, Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was exchanged between both parties to seal the commitment from both parties to work together towards developing SMEs in Malaysia, particularly in the areas of branding and packaging.

One of the activities by the Brand Innovation Centre is to mobilise the Mobile Branding Gallery; a specially designed and equipped bus that will visit rural areas throughout the country to educate local SMEs on the importance of rebranding products in innovative and creative ways.
